The best way to become a gourmet chef without being old enough to go to school is to practice and watch your parents cook.  Suggest things, such as, "needs more salt" or "could use some basil".  Trial and error is a great learning tool.    Report

I know it seems odd to have a 8 year old child interested in cooking let alone wanting to engage in this type of communication. I think it's really brave of her. Her heart is in the right place. I know you must think that this is some kind of prank, but she is for real. Her questions such as age is just a young girls curiosity. We are trying to give her the freedom to communicate at her level, so give her a chance to engage. She gets so excited when someone e-mails her and any encouragement would be much appreciated. She has always been gifted and as excelled in many things. She is a child who is a 2nd grader, doing third grade work, reading on a 5th grade level. She has always loved to cook and will watch cooking shows over cartoons. She is very involved in the kitchen as well as our other two children who are 5 and 6. All of them have been cooking since they could walk, especially making cakes. I design cakes as a hobby, so they always helped me make them and bake them.  My husband and I are firm believers in nuturing independence, and knowing how to cook is one of those things. My husband and I are not by any means professional in the cooking arena, but know enough to give her a good start. Like atheletics, piano, or any other speciality if started young they can develope into great things. If there are camps, websites, schools during the summer, or other recommendations to nuture a young 8 olds desire to increase her knowledge of cooking and someday full fill a dream to be a great cook/chef then she, my husband, and I would like to know about it. I remember cooking with my Grandmother when i was 3 and 4 and so on. That is where my love of food stems from. Culinary school is a great idea. It is important at your age to learn as much as possible from watching tv, mom, dad, ect...and always, always ask as many question as you want, after all, thats the best way to learn. Most high schools are beginning to have much better cooking programs, if you can get involved in that at your school, that would be a GREAT prerequisite. Unfortunately I didn't have that opportunity. The more of a head start you have the better. The top schools are The Culinary Institute of America, The French Culinay Institute (both in NY) Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Johnson and Whales (where Emeril went) and New England Culinary Institute. You know, when my Grandmother ( Granny) comes to visit, she and I sometimes make pancakes.I have a question do you know any breakfast,lunch or,snack recipes for 8 year olds like me? On a more positive note, I'm really excited for you and I wish you the best of luck. I wish that I would have had that kind of ambition when I was 8 years old!
